Thyroid disorders are among the most straightforward conditions for FAA medical certification. Hypothyroidism is a CACI condition — with the right documentation, your AME can issue your certificate on the spot.
Hypothyroidism goes through CACI (Conditions AMEs Can Issue) — one of the fastest pathways. Your AME can approve your certificate at the appointment without sending it to the FAA in Oklahoma City. Typical timeline is 1 to 2 weeks.
Hyperthyroidism, including Graves' disease, requires stability documentation but is also certifiable once well-controlled.
Bring three things to your AME appointment: a recent TSH level showing normal range, your current medication list, and a clinical progress note from your provider within 90 days.
Thyroid replacement medications like levothyroxine (Synthroid) are fully acceptable. The FAA just wants to see that your levels are stable and properly managed.
A history of thyroid cancer requires more documentation but does not permanently disqualify you. You'll need to demonstrate successful treatment, stable thyroid levels on replacement therapy, and clearance from your oncologist.
